Book Reports

What creative minds we have! Our book reports were wonderful. Students focused on Character, Setting, Problem, Resolution, and Summary for this report. The products were very thought out.
Way to go!!

Mystery Mail and Dead Words

We have been working on a ton of reading strategies. Last week we received some Mystery Mail and worked on our inferencing. This week we are working on writing and talked about words that are used too often. We are calling these words, Dead Words, and know not to use them in out writing anymore. We are using our voices more now. This is really coming in handy with our persuasive papers. We are all real estate agents trying to persuade people to buy a haunted house.

Subtraction

Each student was give a task. Go to the grocery store with $300. Subtract your products until you get as close to $0 as possible. This was a blast and we really worked hard on our subtraction!

Also, ask you student to sing the "Double Zero, We Can Win" and "Cross it Out Add Ten" songs.

Wednesday

Dice Addition

We are reviewing addition and rounding. We are working on 3-digit addition in class. Soon we will be moving to subtraction.

Ask your student to sing our estimation song.
"Estimate, About, About, Means Rounding, About, About.  Estimate, About, About, Means Rounding, About, About. First you round..... then you add....  First you round..... then subtract.... First you round..... then multiply....  First you round..... then divide....   Estimate, About, About, Means Rounding, About, About. Estimate, About, About, Means Rounding, About, About."

Today we reviewed and practiced addition by rolling the dice.

Energy! Energy! Energy!

Energy! Energy! Energy!
Currently we are studying Energy in Science. Last week we talked about Sound Energy. We played with sound eggs, went on a sound walk, learned how sound travels from a drum to our ear, and discussed sounds that come from nature vs. sounds that are man made.

Now we are talking about Light Energy. Shadows, reflection, refraction, absorption, and prisms are just a few of the cool things we are talking about. Check out out lesson on reflection below. Students were able to see how light bounces off a mirror and reflects an image for our eyes to see.

Friday

Visualizing

We can VISUALIZE!

Science Sink and Float

What do YOU think happens when you drop a penny, bean, marble, cork, and grape into oil, water, and honey?? Check it out!

We are working on a unit called Social Studies Alive and our focus is on Geography. Today we worked with GoogleEarth and the students LOVED it! http://www.google.com/earth/index.html. Brain WORKOUT
We have been working hard on each and every lesson. In Math we have learned about graphs and how to read them. We also have discussed numeration, place value and money. Communities have been our main focus in Social Studies. We have studied their laws, their importance, and history. We will be learning about geography next. In science we have discussed tools and procedures. We played a procedure games, made a tools foldable, classified objects, and much more. We have also learned about the States of Matter. Ask about our solid, liquid, and gas picnic. Now we are focusing on mixtures. Our activities include painting with salt, making pancakes, and a virtual investigation. What fun!! Language arts has been full of work. Nouns, verbs, background knowledge, making connections, and visualizing. Stay tuned to see what is Coming Soon!

Mrs. Mackey's Classroom Happenings

 Mackey's Classroom Happenings

GETTING TO KNOW YOU- We have already begun many fun and exciting things the first few weeks of school. We started with getting to know each other in our All About Me News Reports. Students will now  have a place to showcase their individual work of choice throughout the year.

JOBS- Our classroom jobs were chosen together and established to create an environment of community. Each week students will rotate their jobs in order to the learn responsibilities and rules of both our classroom as well as our school.

CENTERS-I'm sure many of our students will tell you that centers is their favorite part of the day. This is great because centers are not only fun, but educational and enriching. We rotate among 12 Literacy and 12 Math Centers throughout the week. Our centers range from working online with their textbook to poetry pizza pans. Students truly are engaged and learning at centers... and having fun at the same time!

NOTEBOOKS- We are keeping interactive notebooks this year for Math, Reading & Writing, and Science & Social Studies. These notebook are filled with information, foldables and activities we are working on in class. They are a great resource in studying for a test and very helpful when students need to recall information. Make sure to ask to see these notebooks at Open House.

Class Library- Over the years I have collected many books and begun a wonderful class library. Students are able to choose books by genre and focus on their "just right" book when reading independently or in a group.

Meet Mrs. Mackey

Hi! My name is Lisa Mackey. I grew up in Sugarland, Texas. I have a younger brother and sister. I always knew I wanted to be a teacher and when we were little, I used to make my brother and sister sit down and listen to me as I taught them something new.

I went to college at Texas State University in San Marcos and loved spending time in the Texas Hill Country. I worked with many educational programs in college such as Head Start and Partners in Reading. I was even lucky enough to teach in Costa Rica.

My first year in teaching I was a resident teacher at Meadows Elementary (MY old elementary school) and was able to teach along side some of MY old teachers! I then journeyed to Mark Twain Elementary in HISD. And, now I am proud to be a METZLER HUSKY!! I am excited to be teaching 3rd grade again with the Husky family and having a self-contained class this coming year.

My awesome husband's name is Travis and he is my best friend. We have a daughter named Addison who will be 2 in April. She is wonderful AND full of energy. And Travis and I are excited to say we are expecting baby #2 in January! :) Our family loves to travel and is always playing and laughing!

I cannot wait to hear about you and your families. I look forward to meeting everyone on Friday, August 24th from 1:30-3:30!
